Luis: Today we're at their innovation
centre here in Barcelona, to see how
all this process works.

Luis: So, Jorge this is amazing. Where
are we? What is this?
Jorge: We are in the water innovation
technology centre of ACCIONA. In
particular, this is our research and
development labs. We are developing
new projects on desalination, seawater
desalination.
Luis: And what is exactly,
desalination?
Jorge: The concept is very simple. We
take the salts from the seawater. The
process we use is reverse osmosis
desalination.

Luis: So Jorge, we are in a pilot
plant. What are we seeing here? What
is this?
Jorge: So, this is the core of the
reverse osmosis technology, which is
the spiral wound element. And inside
we have the membrane, reverse osmosis
membrane. So the water, the seawater
comes this direction which pump it
this direction.
Luis: Right, so the salt goes out that
way, right? We have that the clean
water on the other.
Jorge: Yes.

Jorge: So the last stage is to close
the tube. And, finally, we take this
seawater from one of the yellow tanks.
It goes into the pressure vessel, and
in the back we collect the brine or
the concentrate, and in front of the
central tube, we collect the permeate.

Luis: The clean water.
Jorge: Yeah.
Luis: So Jorge, how much does one of
these actually will produce of clean
water?
Jorge: This element produces, more or
less, 2,000 litres per hour. But in a
big plant we can produce water for
500,000 people or 1 million people.
Luis: Wow.
Jorge: You want to try this water?
Luis: Absolutely. I'd love to.
Actually, I'm thirsty after seeing all
the process.
Jorge: So this is the end of the
process – clean water.
Luis: Jorge, what’s the vision for the
future of ACCIONA?
Jorge: The vision is very simple. To
provide clean water to the people of
the world.
